WP 2.9: three bugs, and how to fix them
posted by scrappy on Monday January 25, @05:12PM

News Denis de Bernardy writes "

As many of you already know, WP 2.9 has been released over the WE, and… oh bummer:

  • RSS widgets are completely broken on servers that are missing both of iconv and multi-byte string functions;
  • The curl transport is broken on some servers with an outdated library. This breaks the WP cron, and with it future posting, pings, etc.

Not all sites are affected, of course. Most aren't, in fact. But for those few who are, the situation is frustrating.

Luckily, there is a fix.

10 Crappy Things About the Green Movement
posted by scrappy on Tuesday September 22, @07:36AM

News Willi Paul writes "

Run it....

1. Green web sites that don’t connect to actual neighborhoods – that just post, babble and ghost.

2. Big ass ego sustainability consultants who think the world will change as they get rich.

3. Green job training seminars that cost 499.00.

4. Little or no praise or support for the effort from the Latino community, period.

5. Scant connection between all of the key hot button issues -- too much weight on a climate crisis and foodies.

6. “Green Celebrities.” Crap.

7. Little scrutiny and basic integrity on now Obama’s cowering to the military industrial devils in Afghanistan.

8. The idolization of the new green cars with little planning for the day we all have NO CARS.

9. Green products, green product web sites, green product web sites that rate their own profit-driven and pre-sponsored green products.

10. Burning Man.

Will 2012 be a bumpy ride? Welcome to the Apocalyp

Yellowstone National Park, January 1, 2009
Happy New Year! The holidays are a tough time for a lot of people, what with visiting family, cold weather, long travel delays, etc. But for me this December was particularly rocky because of intense earthquake activity here in Yellowstone. Scientists are downplaying the threat of the Yellowstone Caldera blowing, but volcanic eruptions - especially super volcanic eruptions - are notoriously hard to predict. My money is on a big blast in 2012.

City of Belen takes leap to becoming carbon neutra
posted by scrappy on Tuesday September 22, @07:34AM
from the dept.
News Deston Nokes writes "

BELEN, N.M., Sept. 15 -- Belen made a huge leap in its effort to become carbon neutral with the unveiling of three solar power dishes outside City Hall. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Belen Mayor Ronnie Torres were the honored guests at a ceremony hosted by solar developer Integrative Solar.

"I applaud the City of Belen for their efforts to 'Lead by Example,'" Governor Richardson said. "As Governor, I've made becoming a leader in energy innovation a priority for New Mexico and this project is a great example of what is possible when we work together."

The City of Belen, N.M., in partnership with Integrative Solar, LLC, installed three concentrated solar power (CSP) units at the Belen City Hall. The installation is the first step in a much larger 1.9 megawatt solar project to be completed once funding is secured.
